I'm of the opinion that you're better off staying on the strip and forgoing the car. Cars are useless in Vegas. You can get everywhere on foot, by cab, or via the monorail/bus. I loved Alladin (now Planet Hollywood) but would avoid Excalibur, unless you REALLY REALLY REALLY like kids. You can typically find better room rates on the far end of The Strip (Luxor, etc.), but it's a pretty good hike to get anywhere from there.
Personally, I wouldn't stay downtown, but that works for some people. Downtown is nice to visit, but otherwise, I think it's a dump.
